Prereq: Biology for majors
Not teaching this course at this time
The Final exam will be the earliest of the two possible time periods.
Materials needed
1. Dissecting equipment
Scissors, Scalpel, forceps, probe, and straight pins.
- A kit is be available in the bookstore. You can also get materials at medical supply places in OKC. The most important piece of equipment is a good pair of Forceps.
2. Color pencils are recommended
3. Gloves are also useful, but not required.
4. A supplemental of summaries, outlines, readings, and diagrams is available in the copy center. You need to ask for it by the course title Animal Biology and my name, Hellack
5. You must have the Textbook and the lab manual. You will need the textbook every time we meet.
Grading:
- Lecture Exams are primarily essay. This course builds from the beginning to the end so parts of each lecture exam will be comprehensive. Each lecture exam will be worth 100 pts. There will be 4 Lecture exams. One lecture final that will count for 200 pts.
- Lab. Exams are primarily short answer, involve primarily the recognition of animals (relative to their taxonomy, structures, and in some instances functions of parts). There will be 4 lab exams, 100 pts each. The lab final is worth 200 pts. It is not comprehensive. However, we often call it the pig final because the last few weeks of the semester involve the dissection of a fetal pig. This exam is an oral exam with 100 pts possible for the identification of parts and 100 pts possible for the dissection itself. There will also be 20 pts given for a frog dissection quiz.
- Both the lecture and the lab exams will be taken on the same day and will take two hours of that day. The exams are given ever two weeks on Thursday. There can be no make ups. Lab exams take hours to set up. I will drop one lab exam from you final total pts. It will be the lowest lab exam. If you miss an exam that is your lowest. If you miss more than one exam, you will have a zero for each of the other exams missed.
- For the lecture points, I will take your lowest lecture exam and compare it to the percentage on your final. If the final percentage on the final is higher I will substitute the final percentage for the lowest lecture exam. So while the final is worth 200 pts for everyone, if a substitute is made for you, the final would actually count for 300 pts. If the final is not higher, no substitution will be made but the final still counts for 200 pts.
- There will also be 50 pts available for JOURNAL readings. No books will be accepted. The points will be give based on summary outlines you will be required to hand in one week after the assignment. There will be 10 readings one for each of the major animal phyla we study. The specific paper will be chosen by you. Suggestions are available in the supplemental material obtained from the copy center. Each outline must include at the top of the outline the: Phylum Author, date of publication, title of article, journal, volume and page numbers.
- 100 pts will be given based on quizes and other assignments given though out the semester. These may be drawing, pop quizes or take home assignements.

An incomplete (I) is only possible if: (1) You are passing, (2) Have completed all work except for the final, or (3) some other material (which I accept as an exception) that was due at the end of the semester. You must make arrangements with me to make up this work. I is not a substitution for a F."
You are the only one who can Withdrawal (W) from the course. You must withdraw within the time frame indicated by the University. I do not have the authority to give you a W at any time. This is your responsibility.
Changing to Audit requires my approval. To even be considered for an audit, you must be passing with a grade of C or better and ask before the deadline posted by the University. You also must attend class. Audit is not a substitution for F or W.
